student declaration

Declaration of Student Rights
          All students attending Grosse Pointe South High School have certain unalienable rights that cannot and will not be encroached on by the superiority at South.  As the attending students of South High School, we declare changes to some unjust regulations that conflict with the rights of every student that, exclusion from foreign taxes, the right to defy regulations if deemed unfair, Students ought to have the right to enter school after hours if just cause is presented, and the freedom of choice that cannot be interfered with. Included in these that must be changed are:  Dance regulations, Credit requirements, Parking payments, Limited access to the building, Memorization techniques, Lunch limitations, superiority mindset of some students, School Store hours, restriction of the student body president and limited passing time. We find these laws to be unjust and unfit for South High School Students.  All of these mentioned have been found to have no positive impact on the student body, and are proven to cause more stress. To maintain positive structure among South High school students, we declare the immediate adjustments to certain regulations.  

     I.        Dance regulations: He has disallowed leaving dances early, leaving us to wait whether or not it is important reasons or not. This has become an issue on all students’ minds; if a student had paid for the ticket and you have arrived late for some reason then students should be allowed access with proper identification. Once inside the dance students should have the right to leave when they please. This regulation has caused many students to have distain for the school, and should be immediately abolished.
  II.        He has enforced class credits for graduation making the students choices limited. Students should have the right to decide whether or not they want to take art or other enforced credits. Making certain classes required for credits is impeding student’s freedom of choice limiting them more than it should. This regulation is hated among the student masses and should be abolished.
III.        He has enforced that parking needs to be paid in between classes. Parking regulations causes stress among students and limits their freedom as students of Grosse Pointe South. During school hours there should be a pass to allow students be free of improper fees. It forces the students to pay with their hard earned money in very unfair ways.  This regulation does not contribute to the students well being, wealth, or academic focus.
IV.        He has closed all doors after school hours, not allowing students to enter for any reason. Closing all doors after schools hours has made it difficult for student to access their locker causing stress and anxiety. Students should have the right to enter the school for any just reason, with proper identification. This regulation does not have any positive influence or results on students.
   V.        He has banned recording of lectures and certain laws for student memorization. Banning of recordings has negatively students making many classes with many notes difficult. This has limited some students who study using repetition but since recorders are not permitted those students are subject to difficulty. This regulation is unfair, and interferes with the abilities of students.
VI.        He has made lunch limited to only lunch rooms instead of freedom to eat anywhere. Many times students have been told to eat somewhere else because of danger messes. Many students cannot find anywhere else to sit especially if they had gotten their lunch late.
VII.        He has promoted peoples above the domain of the common student. Many students have been put above others in seemingly aristocratic ways. Promoting others has created an unequal balance among students, making the masses separate.
VIII.        He has restricted the school store to only being open at lunch. The school store is a necessity among students here at South. Many rely on it for supplies and even food. With limiting it to be only open at lunch, it forces us to visit on when he wants not when we want. This regulation is unjust because it makes the students dependent on the time and place put forth by the superiority of South.
 IX.        He has restricted the authority of the student body president. Restricting the powers of the student’s president is reducing to power of students establishing a tyrannical rule. It limits the students say in matter reducing the idea of popular will. It is our school also we should have a say in what happens. This regulation is unjust because of its tyrannical nature.
   X.        He has restricted passing times from classes. Many students have just cause for being late, students may have been caught talking to a hall monitor, or have classes on the other side of the school. Many students are met upon arrival with tarides that are not deserved. This regulation is viewed unjust among the student populous for its oppression.

Without the courage of our founding fathers sending a letter to the king of England telling him we didn’t want to be controlled anymore, America wouldn’t be where it is today.  With the topics we chose to discuss, we are choosing to take our own stand against what we believe is needed to be changed to make South a better learning environment for its students.  So this is a letter of our own accord which we have constructed to illustrate the letter to the king of the popular will of the people.  It enforced change which we would also like to see with our own written letter. If you do not heed this warning then we the students will have no other choice then to boycott and to refuse to take part in classes. Until we are free from the grasps of South’s hierarchy, and if we are met with a militant response then we also will have a militant response. We hope that you accept to these terms and accept them because it is of popular will that we present these to you.
